With everyone from the SEC to the Pentagon warning about growing cybersecurity threats, the Edward Snowden revelations leading to new pushes for privacy legislation and enforcement both at home and abroad, and businesses’ increasing sophistication in collecting and monetizing consumer data, privacy and data security have moved to the top of many companies’ legal and regulatory agendas. This one-hour CLE presentation will review recent developments affecting privacy and data security in the workplace, including surveillance laws and social media use.

Jonathan Cedarbaum is a partner at WilmerHale in Washington DC, based in the firm’s Government and Regulatory Litigation Group. He rejoined WilmerHale in 2011 after spending two years in the leadership of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC), where he ultimately served as Acting Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Office, which provides authoritative legal advice to the White House, the Attorney General, and all executive branch departments and agencies. During his time at OLC, Mr. Cedarbaum was deeply involved in the development and early implementation of the Dodd-Frank and Affordable Care Acts. As a member of the Justice Department’s senior leadership and as a legal counselor to senior officials across the government, he was also involved in numerous other statutory and regulatory initiatives, including in the areas of data security and data privacy.

WilmerHale has been accredited by the New York State and California State Continuing Legal Education Boards as a provider of continuing legal education. This program is being planned with the intention to offer CLE credit in California and transitional CLE credit in New York. This program, therefore, is being planned with the intention to offer CLE credit for both newly admitted and experienced New York attorneys. This program has also been approved for Rhode Island CLE credit. WilmerHale will apply for Virginia, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Delaware CLE credit if requested. The type and amount of credit awarded will be determined solely by those state CLE Boards. Attendees requesting CLE credit must attend the entire program.
