Attorney News

Gary Born, chair of WilmerHale’s International Arbitration Practice Group, has been honored by international arbitration practitioners and academics for his recently published book, International Arbitration and Forum Selection Agreements: Drafting and Enforcing (Kluwer 3rd ed. 2010). Born’s book was voted the “Book of the Year” for international dispute resolution by members of the Oil-Gas-Energy-Mining-Infrastructure Dispute Management (OGEMID) network. Born also received the “Book of the Year” award in 2009 for his treatise International Commercial Arbitration.

International Arbitration and Forum Selection Agreements, a Wolters Kluwer publication, is a concise, practical primer on the fundamentals of drafting and enforcing international arbitration agreements and other dispute resolution clauses. The extensively revised and expanded third edition offers model arbitration and forum selection clauses for international contracts and explains the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. The book contains some 200 model arbitration or forum selection clauses, or provisions for inclusion in such clauses, together with practical commentary on the benefits and costs of such provisions.

Born’s book has been praised by all leading international arbitration institutions:

“Once again, Gary Born has tackled a canvas of daunting proportions with the surest of touches. The result is an authoritative and comprehensive work to which users of arbitration can refer with every confidence…”
— John Beechey, Chairman, ICC International Court of Arbitration

“The book is a masterful combination of sound analysis and clear exposition.”
— Professor William W. Park, President, London Court of International Arbitration

“Gary Born’s third edition of International Commercial Arbitration and Forum Selection Agreements: Drafting and Enforcing is both brilliant in its depth and incredibly practical and utilitarian in its efficient considerations. This singular work is at its core a profound insight into conflict risk management.”
— William K. Slate II, President and CEO, American Arbitration Association

“A splendid and truly international guide to drafting arbitration and forum selection clauses. Written in clear and concise terms, it provides a wealth of practical insight for both lawyers and businessmen involved in international business transactions.”
— Professor Michael Pryles, Chairman, Singapore International Arbitration Centre

The 2010 OGEMID Awards are determined by popular vote among OGEMID’s membership. OGEMID is a professional body of approximately 1,000 international dispute resolution lawyers, in-house counsel and academics from around the world.
