Partner Seth Waxman was one of several prominent lawyers named special advisors to the American Bar Association’s new Task Force on Law and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The task force recently announced by ABA President Mary L. Smith will study the potential benefits and risks of generative AI to the legal profession and the society lawyers serve.

Waxman, co-chair of WilmerHale’s Appellate and Supreme Court Litigation practice and a former US solicitor general, is one of the nation’s most renowned Supreme Court and appellate advocates. Other top lawyers named special advisors to the task force include Michael Chertoff, a former secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS); Ivan Fong, Medtronic’s executive vice president, general counsel and secretary and former DHS general counsel and Michelle Lee, CEO and founder of Obsidian Strategies and former U.S. Patent and Trademark Office CEO.

Among the topics the task force will explore are generative AI’s risks and how to mitigate them, the utilization of AI to increase access to justice, AI governance and AI in legal education, according to the ABA’s news release.
