Sonya Ebermann
Counsel
Sonya Ebermann focuses on international commercial and treaty-based arbitrations across a range of industries, including oil and gas, renewable energies, manufacturing, intellectual property, automobile and investment. She has represented clients in institutional arbitrations under a variety of arbitral rules, including DIS, ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL and ICSID. Ms. Ebermann has experience with cases involving both civil law and common law jurisdictions, conducted in English, French and German. She focuses on advising clients in arbitrations governed by civil law systems in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. In addition to her role in advising clients, Ms. Ebermann also regularly assists arbitrators as tribunal secretary and speaks on international arbitration.

Representing the German branch of a global oil and gas service company in two DIS arbitrations and setting aside proceedings against an oil and gas storage company relating to alleged defects in subsurface equipment. Seated in Hanover, subject to German law. The dispute was settled on terms favorable to our client.

Representing a European pharmaceutical company in an ICC arbitration against a Japanese pharmaceutical company relating to the payment of royalties under a license agreement after the relevant patents expired. Seated in London, subject to US, EU and Japanese law.

Representing the Brazilian subsidiary of a Canadian pulp and paper company in an ICC arbitration relating to the acquisition of one of the largest pulp and paper mills in Brazil. Seated in Sao Paulo, subject to Brazilian law. The tribunal issued an award in favor of our client.

Representing a major international manufacturing company in an ICC arbitration against a leading global technology company relating to alleged defects in the supply of machinery. Seated in Paris. The arbitration was settled on terms favorable to our client.

Representing a German hotel management company in an LCIA arbitration relating to a failed joint venture agreement with Cyprus and Russian counterparts. Subject to English law.

Representing a South-East Asian state-owned oil and gas company in an UNCITRAL arbitration against an international consortium relating to the status and value of an off-shore hydrocarbon field in the South China Sea. Seated in Singapore, subject to Vietnamese law. The arbitration was settled on terms favorable to our client.

Acting as tribunal secretary in an NAI arbitration relating to the breach of a share purchase agreement in the oil industry in Africa subject to Dutch law; an ICC arbitration relating to the breach of a joint venture agreement in the oil industry in Africa subject to Nigerian law; an ICC arbitration relating to the breach of a commercial agreement in the manufacturing industry in Asia subject to German law.
