Shanelle Irani is a senior associate in the Litigation/Controversy Department, and is a member of the International Arbitration Practice Group. Ms. Irani has represented clients in arbitrations under a variety of institutional rules (including ICC, LCIA, SIAC and DIAC rules) and in ad hoc arbitrations seated in various jurisdictions across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. She has particular experience in M&A, joint venture, intellectual property, mining and construction disputes. She also has particular expertise in India-related disputes.

Ms. Irani is on the Board of Directors of ArbiralWomen, the leading international organization for women in alternative dispute resolution. She is also a member of the steering committee of Indian Women in International Arbitration and a member of the Steering Committee of the Young IAMC of the International Arbitration & Mediation Centre (IAMC), Hyderabad. Additionally, Ms. Irani serves as an assistant editor for the Journal of International Arbitration and the Indian Review of International Arbitration.

Experience

  • Representing a European pharmaceutical company in an ICC arbitration against a Japanese pharmaceutical company relating to the payment of royalties under a license agreement after the relevant patents expired. Seated in London, subject to US, EU and Japanese law.
  • Representing a Latin American mining conglomerate in a series of ICC arbitrations against a Middle Eastern steel company relating to long-term iron ore supply contracts. Seated in London.
  • Representing an investor in an UNCITRAL arbitration against Montenegro relating to the violation of the fair and equitable treatment standard and indirect expropriation of investments.
  • Representing the former promoters of a leading Indian adhesive tape manufacturing company in a SIAC arbitration against Canadian and Mauritian entities relating to two share purchase agreements.
