The below commentary from The Legal 500 Deutschland highlights the WilmerHale lawyers recognized in the 2025 edition** (Tier 1 – 6).
Antitrust: Tier 4
The focus of WilmerHale's antitrust team is on procedural support, in particular antitrust damages, administrative antitrust and fine proceedings. In doing so, it acts for both the Defendant and the Claimant. This focus corresponds to the focus of the two practice group leaders: Hans-Georg Kamann is experienced in handling administrative and court proceedings, and Ulrich Quack* in accompanying cartel proceedings before the FCO and the European Commission, as well as in representing clients in civil proceedings. In cross-border matters, the firm regularly cooperates with its offices in Brussels, London and the US, which is particularly important when advising on merger and investment control law.
Compliance: Tier 6
The German team at WilmerHale works in close cooperation with the US practice and is thus regularly involved in cross-border matters, often including US monitorships for industrial and pharmaceutical companies. The team is also experienced in implementing compliance management systems, complying with sanctions and conducting transaction-related due diligence. Practice head Jan Wendler often works on DOJ mandates and is increasingly involved in ESG-related matters.
Dispute Resolution – Commercial Litigation: Tier 4
WilmerHale is also primarily involved in corporate, insolvency and investment disputes, in addition to disputes at the intersection of civil law and regulation. Furthermore, the team has experience in liability lawsuits involving product liability and warranty claims. Practice head Vanessa Wettner focuses on commercial, consumer and capital market disputes, while Stefan Ohlhoff contributes extensive expertise in antitrust damages claims on both the Defendant and plaintiff sides. Hans-Georg Kamann devotes himself to administrative and constitutional disputes, in addition to competition law proceedings, including antitrust, state aid and public procurement law.
Healthcare: Tier 4
WilmerHale has expertise in regulatory and reimbursement matters and was very active in the area of data law during the reporting period, for example in connection with data transfers, health apps and research with patient data. The team, led by Hans-Georg Kamann, an expert in EU regulatory affairs, is also particularly comfortable in matters involving antitrust and public procurement law and regularly represents clients in approval procedures and disputes in the medical device and pharmaceutical segment.
Intellectual Property – Unfair Competition: Tier 2
WilmerHale specializes in complex, strategically significant litigation, particularly at the interface between competition, data protection and consumer law. The practice, led by Vanessa Wettner, is strongly represented in the e-commerce sector, but also advises companies in the fashion, consumer goods and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to legal representation before German and European courts, the practice also includes advice on advertising campaigns, license agreements and transactions. Vanessa Wettner, who enjoys an excellent reputation in particular among US tech clients, is the central point of contact for the practice.
Information Technology – Data Protection: Tier 2
At WilmerHale, the legal work focuses on representing clients in disputes, for example in the context of claims for damages, as well as representing them in proceedings with public authorities, which is why the team was also active in the reporting period in various CJEU proceedings on the subject of data protection. Other areas of expertise include advising companies on mass proceedings against consumer protection associations and on European laws such as the Digital Services and Data Act. Martin Braun heads the group and impresses with his expertise in international data transfers and matters related to social networks as part of his extensive practice.
Public Law – Economic Administrative Law: Tier 3
WilmerHale is frequently involved in constitutional and administrative proceedings at the European level and also offers its client base, which consists of large industrial companies and the public sector, interface expertise in data protection and competition law. The firm regularly works with its Brussels office on issues at the intersection of the latter two areas. Hans-Georg Kamann, who heads the practice together with Martin Seyfarth, who is well-versed in public policy, also regularly works in this context. Further expertise includes regulatory advice on environmental issues, ESG and supply chains.
Public Law – State Aid: Tier 3
WilmerHale advises companies and state institutions on how to obtain and grant state aid, and supports them in European Commission investigations and in national and European court proceedings. It also has extensive experience in assisting clients from the public sector, as well as from the transport, infrastructure and tourism sectors, in disputes, including complaints procedures and competitor actions before national and European courts. The team is led by Hans-Georg Kamann, who advises clients on all matters of antitrust, state aid and public procurement law, as well as European administrative and constitutional law.
