Robert Kimmitt Shortlisted for Attorney of the Year by The American Lawyer

Recognition

The American Lawyer has shortlisted Ambassador Robert Kimmitt in the Attorney of the Year category of its Industry Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements and contributions by individuals, law firms and legal departments.

The American Lawyer recognized Kimmitt for his successful efforts to help gain the release of Wall Street Journal Moscow correspondent Evan Gershkovich, who was wrongfully detained by the Russian government for 491 days. Kimmitt, Partner David Bowker and a WilmerHale team represented Dow Jones & Co., parent company of The Wall Street Journal. Gershkovich was released, as part of one of the most significant and complex prisoner exchanges in US history, on August 1, 2024. The exchanges involved 24 people held by multiple countries.

Kimmitt advises clients on issues spanning public policy, national security, international investment and governance. Both in government and the private sector, he has held a wide variety of senior positions at the intersection of international business, finance, law and policy.

He served as Deputy Secretary of the US Treasury from 2005 to 2009. Before joining the firm in 1997, Kimmitt had served as US Ambassador to Germany from 1991 to 1993. He returned to WilmerHale in 2009, working in the Regulatory and Government Affairs Practice and co-chairing the Strategic Response Group.

Kimmitt’s practice has earned him significant recognition. Most recently, he was selected by peers for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America for government relations for the thirteenth consecutive year. He was also listed among Washington's Best Lawyers by Washingtonian magazine for his national security practice in 2011, 2013 and 2015.

Partner Michelle Diamond was also shortlisted in the Young Lawyer of the Year — Beyond Practice category of the awards.

Winners will be announced at the American Lawyer Industry Awards on November 13 in New York.
