2024 was a landmark year for privacy law, featuring numerous developments at the federal, state and international levels, ranging from newly enacted statutes to massive regulatory enforcement actions. Early signs already indicate that 2025 is likely to be just as active, as legislatures and regulators continue to forge ahead in developing and implementing new legal frameworks to manage a rapidly evolving field. The United States, in particular, will likely see meaningful changes in proposed legislation and enforcement priorities, given the new administration.

Overall, in 2025 we expect to see continued developments at the state level (with the emergence of new state privacy law proposals and implementation and enforcement of recently enacted state laws) and from federal regulators, as well as continued international development. Furthermore, ongoing legal developments related to artificial intelligence (AI) are likely to have privacy law impacts—and vice versa. Understanding these trends will be critical not just for privacy professionals but also for legal departments more broadly.

During this webinar, WilmerHale lawyers Arianna Evers, Kirk Nahra, Ali Jessani and Genesis Ruano will discuss the top privacy trends that businesses need to pay attention to in the coming year and beyond.

The specific topics they will cover include:

  • shifting priorities and compliance challenges in light of the second Trump Administration;
  • new US state privacy laws;
  • health privacy law updates;
  • changes at the Federal Trade Commission;
  • notable enforcement trends;
  • data broker enforcement and regulations;
  • landscape for children’s data, biometrics and AI; and
  • relevant international developments.

Before this webinar, you may wish to review our recent blog posts on the WilmerHale Privacy and Cybersecurity Law blog. You can also subscribe to the blog to stay up to date with the latest developments in privacy law.
